Basingstoke Festival of Transport - 11th May 2008

After two days cycling around Rutland water and Brampton Valley  in the fantastic sunshine, Carole and I had a sad case of 'bicycle bottom' so we were very pleased to sink into the comfortable seats of the 'F and head for Basingstoke.

We set the Navigator for the quickest time but though we would be too late for the convoy meet up on the M3. But would you believe it? We spotted an F’ just past the services, then another, and ‘Hey Presto’ the convoy. Lucky!

I love these shows if only to relax and enjoy leisurely chats in the warm sunshine with the likes of Adrian and Dawn Clifford, our own Stewart (who incidentally won the driving test on the day... Congrats Stewart). Tim, Sean & Claire and so on.

The usual huge collection of vintage and modern transport was on offer. You know the sort of thing? Like most people, certain vehicles take my attention and provoke memories of past events in my life or conjure up visions of other worlds, like the Morris bus / people carrier atop a low loader and looking as though it had come straight out of Bolivia and some dusty outpost village.

A war time GMC’s US Army lorry reminded me of my army days in New Zealand and I can still hear the wonderful mechanical wine it  made taking me back to barracks. A lovely old Leyland coach in Kodak yellow also caught my eye.

Healy’s, all types of MG and for the boy in us all, the latest Ferrari, they were all there to drool over or admire.

Good show, great day...
